TV for children is not a friend | Mediasat – Mediasat

Watching TV in childhood increases the risk that they are older children often become victims of bullies.

TV has already become normal “nanny” for children of any age. Many recall that with some admiration, while still a tiny baby, they looked at the figures running around on the screen right before their eyes. In fact, the importance of television is that, if the content is suitable for children, they can watch it an hour or two. However, when they watch TV for a longer time, it can have serious consequences in the future.

A new study dedicated to the study of the effects of interaction of children with TV shows that television increases the risk that children are victims of bullies by the time they go to Grade 6.

According to Linda Pagani, working at the University of Montreal (Quebec, Canada), such activities as a long television viewing in childhood makes children less social and less sociable. Such children may lack a series of interpersonal skills that should allow them to build a full-fledged relations with classmates and friends, turning these children into the ideal victims of bullies. The study was conducted among patients at Children’s Hospital of University Clinical Center of San Justine.

For the study Pagani and members of her team have been working with about two thousand teens and their parents living in Canada. Researchers questioned parents about their children’s habits in terms of watching TV, and children – how much they had been harassed by bullies in the sixth grade. In particular, how often bullies have taken a variety of items, and whether they had experienced violence.

Based on the results of the study, the scientists concluded that the viewing habits of children just over two years indicate the degree of risk that they will become victims of bullies, reaching the age of sixth grade. Furthermore, this risk is increased by 11% for every 53 minutes viewed programs per day. This is in addition to all other factors, leading to the fact that children are victims of bullying.

Excessive TV makes children less creative, less curious and less expressive. According to Pagani, the time that the children do not spend on daily physiological needs – such as eating, sleeping and personal hygiene, they should spend on something that enriches their lives and improve their relationships with others.
