The director of the “Belarusian Station” Andrei Smirnov met with Vologda at Picnic Festival VOICES. Andrei Sergeyevich spoke about the role of the Vologda region in the life of his family, a movie about censorship in the Soviet time and shared his thoughts about “Leviathan” Zvyagintsev.

– my paternal grandfather – electrical engineer Sergey Smirnov. He became an engineer before the Revolution, the Civil War was not involved, but worked with the Bolsheviks. There was a man totally apolitical, but nevertheless managed to triple thunder in jail. And that was the last time when he was already in old age, in 1942, both of his sons were at the front, it raked political case, denounced by one of his colleagues. Father of five years entered the camp in Mordovia. While his sons were at war, he was sitting. At that time was a form of punishment – “minus one hundred cities.” In the largest cities in Russia, he had no right to live. He was specifically associated with metallurgy, eight or ten years he lived in Makeyevka in the Ukraine, there was the largest metallurgical combine. And then I moved to Cherepovets, where he worked for ten years, and the first time I was in Vologda with his father, a writer Sergey Sergeyevich Smirnov, and then we spent several days in Cherepovets, my grandfather and grandmother.
The second time Andrey Smirnov came to Vologda, too, along with his father when he was collecting material for his book “Brest Fortress»:
– He then sought the defense of the Brest Fortress. In Vologda lived one, Anatoly Vinogradov, a blacksmith, it was a very handsome man, a Russian man with beautiful face. I remember with pleasure an evening spent in his house. I was at that time fourteen years, that’s when I met a little closer to Vologda.
His career Andrei Smirnov was not easy, it often appeared big breaks because of conflict with the Soviet authorities – prevented the censorship:
– My first independent picture called “Angel”, she was removed from a story by Yuri Olesha, the material of the civil war. It featured a number of prominent artists: Nicholas Hubenko, future Minister of Culture of the USSR, the main role played Leonid Kulagin, there debuted the great Russian actor Georgy Burkov. The hand I was happy, it debuted many actors became famous. But the picture is rattled on the shelf for 20 years or more. Negative her disappeared: whether it lost, or specially washed, I was deprived of work. It was made on the material of the civil war, I tried to look at it not as we had made, but as the tragedy of the people, who faced two halves. Here’s what I got on her hands, it was seen as a completely unacceptable approach. After that, three, perhaps I was not allowed to work at all.
As the director says, the only film in his life, untouched by censors – “Once there was a woman”, which he directed in 2009, so and for his dignity, and his faults, he is only responsible.
– I am a strong supporter of liberalism and democracy. I am sure that Russia will sooner or later all the same is not going anywhere and will be on the way. Worldwide, there are only fifteen countries, where people live well, without interfering with each other, choosing those whom they want. And in all these countries a liberal economy and a parliamentary democracy. There is no alternative, all other methods give or North Korea or Iraq, or any Islamic state, and Russia did on the way in which it is now, nothing good awaits. I am convinced of this.
