Samsung and LG have taken a course on quantum dots as cheaper OLED technology has not yet been – iXBT.com

Confirming earlier reports have appeared source reports that the world’s largest TV manufacturers – Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics Inc – headed for use in their TVs next generation technology of quantum dots to temporarily postpone the hope to make OLED technology affordable for the mass market.

The technology involves the addition of quantum dots in a conventional liquid crystal panel of the additional layer – film with special light-emitting elements. It allows you to improve color rendering, enhance contrast and reduce the power consumption of the panel. The process of production of panels with quantum dots is relatively simple and gives an opportunity to improve the image quality at the cost of much lower cost than switching to OLED.

Lower cost technology will quickly become a mass, observers believe. According to their estimates, the price of 55-inch “quantum dot” TV may be only 30-35% higher than the price of today’s LCD TVs, while the OLED TV is worth several times more.

The problem so far seems only to get enough aforementioned film material which produces a very limited number of manufacturers, including Quantum Materials and Nanoco Group.

Interestingly, Nanoco recently launched in South Korea to build a factory that will start to produce material with quantum dots in the first half of 2015. Analysts believe that the customer of this material is one of South Korean companies, though exactly what – is unknown.

LG has already announced its intention to produce TVs with quantum dots. Samsung representative acknowledged that the company is also considering this technology. Among the well-known electronics manufacturers now only Sony sells TVs with screens on the quantum dots, but the South Korean companies need to hurry – at the recent IFA show in Berlin on his television screen on quantum dots show the Chinese company TCL Multimedia Technology Holdings.
